Shedding a tear for Summer

It's been a busy summer, we moved and are still living out of boxes. My oldest just start pre-school and I thought I'd have more time to unpack, but the youngest is really enjoying my undivided attention. So miniatures have taken a back seat, again. Sorry.

The one thing I regret missing out on this summer was The Summer House by Rundquist Miniatures. I should have known to bid higher, but was going back and forth worried the openings weren't large enough making the interior difficult to decorate and get furniture in. Plus some of the walls are foam board, so I would have had to replace those with wood. The kit was made in 1983 and this is the only one I've seen since I lost out on the one posted on Mini Modern a few years ago.

Bidder 4***b, I hope you build the kit soon and publish your photos somewhere.

Hey Moviedogs, you won the last one, have you finished building it yet? PLEASE send photos of your progress, I'm dying to see this beauty built.

  4. Aw...wish you had gone for this one!! Isn't it interesting that this one sold for almost the same amount as the one on Mini Modern's blog from a few years ago?? I also hope the winner builds this puppy, although I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up back on eBay!!

  5. Hi Cheshire, Welcome! Glad you like the blog. More to come for sure. :D

Hey callsmall, I know. Yeah, I thought the same price was funny too. At the last minute I was going to raise my bid, but was too late. Oh well, maybe another one will turn up in the next three years. I don't envy the builders though, this house looks like a beast to assemble. Here's hoping they give up and put it back on eBay.

  6. Wow! Hope too that who bought it will post pics of it when finished! But I have another question....has anyone purchased the smaller Brinca Dada dollhouse yet? Is it as involved to put together as the first one? Melissa

  7. Hi...I am the winner of this summerhouse from ebay! I haven't done anything with it yet but I plan to soon and I will definitely send you some pics! Any ideas for me on building/decorating it? I have over 10 modern houses in my collection. Not all are built of course. I LOVE LOVE LOVE modern minis!

  8. Maryann!!!!!! Congratulations, I am so jealous!

Do you have a blog or do you share photos anywhere? I would LOVE to see some your dollhouses. Which ones to you have? Please feel free to email me at modernminifan @ gmail . com (remove the spaces).

The pictures of all of the pieces of the Summer House made the kit look like a nightmare to build. I am very curious how the process goes. I hope it is super smooth and not to problematic for you.

Have you built before? First thing I suggest is having someone who is handy to help. I thought I could handle building my antrim, but it would not be in one piece if my husband wasn't so handy.

If possible, I would dry fit the structure with masking tape or painters tape. My concern with the summer house, is it looked like the openings were pretty small, which would make it hard to paint and decorate some rooms.

I would paint the whole thing first, before you assemble it, maybe white and then if there are rooms you want to paint different colors, paint the walls while you can reach them.

Also if you are going to paint or stain the beams/trim, I would do that before you assemble too, but just make sure you don't paint over any identifying numbers on the pieces. Many kits label the pieces to help match the instructions.

The person that bought the other one on ebay years ago was thinking about replacing the foam board with wood to make it sturdier and likely last much longer. But I have yet to see that house built.

Good luck and feel free to email. I'd love to talk more about it with you. :)

  9. Hi...its Maryann again. Thank you so much for all your tips! I don't have a blog yet..I started to make one but never put anything on it. Its called www.maresmodernminis.blogspot.com.
Some of the other houses I have are the Citadel, Brookwood, Merrimack, Summer House by Celerity, Malibu Beach House, Highland, Antrim, and Contemporary Ranch.I think 2 are missing but I can't think of the names right now. I have started to build 3 of them with the help from friends. Problem is I am running out of room to keep these houses once they are built so I don't know when I will be starting this one. Where do you keep all yours? How many do you have? I love talking modern minis and hope we can stay in touch! Its so nice to finally "meet" you. I have lots more to say. You can email me at Pnut700 @ aol. com. Anyone else interested in emailing about modern minis can also email me. Thanks and I LOVE your blog!

  10. One more thing...the house I would love to have is the FantasyCraft California Contemporary! The builder of that house sold it on ebay maybe 2 yrs. ago. I talked to the person who bought it afterwards. That was always my dream house. I spoke with the owner before she put it on ebay and she was willing to sell it to me but I couldn't afford her price at the time. I would jump on another one now! Have you seen any around? Do you have one or know anyone who does? Modern Minis Rock!

  11. Maryann,
I am so envious of your collection. :P I'll drop you an email. I currently have 5, Antrim, KHouse, Emerson, Fascination Station, and the house my mom built. Two are in the garage. 1 in bedroom, 2 in living room. My husband is less than thrilled but the kids like playing with them. My husband is more for a 1 in 1 out approach, so I'm not sure which house I will get next. Space is definitely the issue.

I have only seen that Fantasy Craft "California Contemporary" once one ebay. Here are pictures I blogged. I have yet to see it again. I also liked Fantasy Craft's "Garden Condo" pictured here. Discontinued houses like these are hard to come by, but if I see one, I will let you know. :)
