And the DWR winners are...

...NOT ME!!!

Okay, so here is my entry to the DWR Champagne Chair Contest. The deadline to enter was yesterday, and winners will be announced on January 28th. It took me about 2 hours to cut the cork and straighten and re-shape the wire.

Callsmall entered a really cool chaise, you can see here. Studio7 entered a cool directors chair, check it out here. Linda did some great wire work here. I haven't checked everyone else's blogs yet, but did anyone else enter the contest?

I had a few different ideas for more modern chairs, but I had a hard time implementing. Straigthening and bending the wire was the trickiest part for me. Here are the good, the bad and the ugly shots of my "Squared" chair.

Here are just a couple of the stiff competition this year. Visit the DWR Champagne Chair Contest website to see all of the entries at champagnechair.dwr.com. (Keep checking back as they are still adding yesterday's entries. I entered at 12:30pm yesterday and mine wasn't added to the site until this morning.)

  1. A hint to straighten the wire is to take two pairs of pliers, and clamp down on both ends of the wire. Then, grab a friend, and have a wire tug of war. Before I learned this, I was getting sore fingers and not very straight wire trying to do it by hand.

    Here's my non-winner

    1. Cool hammock idea Linda! I feel your pain on The Hard Way. I feel that most things I do definitely take that route, too! :D

  3. I know I am SO not winning either. The competition is SO fierce!! Some of the chairs are beyond. Great entry -- love your chair, and congrats on doing it! The sense of accomplishment of actually entering was enough for me ;)

    1. I've been thinking about it since you posted it, I didn't realize they were doing another one. Thanks for the heads up! This year definitely kicked it up a notch or two. Fierce indeed. Good luck, I love your chaise lounger!

  4. Hey lady, you are so modest. I love what you did here and agree the materials are deceptively challenging to manipulate. After this foray, I have suggestions for DWR: time to divide the contest into amateur/hobbyist and design students & professionals or maybe even some superlative shout outs: wittiest, most intricate, most creative use of materials, most minimal. There don't have to be hefty prizes for each. Just a small bit of recognition can go a long way. Anyways, just a thought.

Oh and thanks for the marvelous swap package.

    1. Thanks!
Great suggestions! It would be nice if they added some categories. I'll drop them a line too about suggestions for next time.

      You are most welcome!!

  5. Hey, it would depend on the setting. This chair could fit right in where the others couldn't!

  6. Your chair looks awesome! Classic style, very versatile chair indeed. The cork must have been a pain in the capital A to work with, so props to that. I have a set of pliers that are great for straightening out wire, I'll have to email you a picture of them. Thanks again for the swap, that's a lot of booty!!!

    1. Cork sucks to work with, but that wire was pretty pesky too. I ran out of time to finish, but I wish I would have sanded the edges, turned out a little hairy. Enjoy the booty!! :P

  7. It looks fabulous, MD! You would laugh at anything I would come up with. I'm just not crafty. All of these DWR contest cork chairs over the years would be a phenomenal display in person.

    1. Thanks man! Callsmall said they are bumping it up to 15 winners to have on display, but yeah, I'd like to be in a room with all of these. Too inspiring. :D
