Tile time in the Antrim

I finally found some free time to get back to the Antrim. I've used the PRD carpet tiles before to make larger rugs, but in the latest CB2 catalog, they used the carpet squares in a single row like a runner, so I thought I'd play around with that.

The Antrim is still in our dimly lit garage, so I have to jerry-rig a hanging light onto a ladder to get any light on the house now. I plan to take some better photos when we move it inside with better lighting.

The Wilson House - shrine to mid century laminate

Retro Renovation is an incredible blog focused on mid-century modern renovation. I've visited the site over the years for design ideas and inspiration, but I missed the posts on The Wilson House. Maryann Roy sent me the link to this cool video about the house. Last year she made a miniature of the living room with the motiff on the wall for Barbie, but you can see the real living room in the video and pictures linked below.

Thanks for the scoop, Maryann!

Maryann is still a Barbie girl, but she did create this beautiful 1:12 bedroom set for a local charity auctioning off a dollhouse last year. Looks like we're not the only ones wanting more 1:12 from Maryann. Love, Hugs and More. New minimodernistas

I love Doris' new Long&Low Love Seat! This smaller sofa could fit just about anywhere, office, living room, bedroom, I must have it! Her new Hemisphere Chair looks like you could just curl up in it; the chair that hugs you back. When I finally get around to making a kids room, I think this would be so cute with some stuffed animals tucked in, too.

Her pixel chair is one of my favorite and now it comes in a 3 colors, brownish maroon, brown and black. I love the pixel squares in the fabric. Her new Shell Table Art is pretty creative, I love how they are all different heights so you can mix and match any of them. I'm going to have to pick up a few of these, I think they would work in any of my rooms.

Fascinating Contest

My mouth dropped when I saw the cover of latest Hobby Builders Supply catalog. Inspired by a burger joint from a converted gas station in Atlanta, Ernie decided to create this kit for the HBS annual contest. I see nothing but modern potential out of this kit. I'm thinking I just might enter.

At three feet wide and more than two feet deep, there is a lot of potential. Maybe add a second floor, or move the entrance to the open back. My head is spinning with possibilities. Top prizes are gift certificates to HBS/miniatures.com. Even without the contest, this could be a fun project. Deadline for entry is Dec. 16, 2011. Anyone else inspired?

My modern lamps can work as floor or ceiling lights. They are not electrified but can be used as sculptures or to fill negative ceiling space. Here are photos from Callsmall's blog using the lamps as hanging lights and LeftCoastMini as floor lamps, and in my Antrim.

Tutorial: SLICE Tilt Coffee Table by PRD Miniatures

I am in love with PRD Miniatures' SLICE Tilt Coffee Table. The table costs $65 finished but you can also buy the kit for only $35.

Here are some photos of the kit and how it is assembled. The kit comes as one piece for the table, plus the acrylic top (pictured in final shots above). Each section is individually numbered. I used an exacto knife to cut out the two tiny connectors between each piece and then laid them out numerically. (Everything is laser cut, I just used the knife to separate the pieces from the thin wood page they come on.)


I started with the smallest piece of the table and the first leg, then added the rest of the rectangular table pieces. Then I started adding the rest of the legs numerically around the table base. At one point I wish I had three hands, but once I got the hang of it, it went together easily.


After assembling the table, I double checked everything was pushed into place and then spray painted it silver. Make sure you follow the directions on the spray paint can - mask, well ventilated area, drop cloth for over spray. I did several light coats of paint from every direction to avoid globbing on too much. In between coats I'd let it dry about 15-20 minutes. Once I got the coverage I wanted, I let it dry 24 hours as per the instructions on the spray paint can. The dried paint helps hold any loose legs together. Enjoy!

Peter Tucker at Good Sam

Peter Tucker from Vancouver BC Canada has been handcrafting fine furniture from Arts and Crafts to modern eras since 1998. I've been a huge fan of his work for years, so it was incredible to meet him in person and discuss his work and the modern movement. He re-creates classic pieces and his own designs, and creates many custom pieces from photos or sketches. Peter is well known for his custom roomboxes and also builds doll houses. I think his florescent and LED lights are truly amazing and they all are his original designs.



Obviously my pictures are nowhere near impressive as Peter's photos on his website (as the roombox photo on the left), but it was really cool seeing his lights and work in person. The details on his furniture are so intricate, making all of his pieces truly works of art.
