Who broke blogger?

You may have noticed you haven't had any new followers to your blogs lately... well the Google Friend Connect has been busted for over a week now. If you try to follow a blog by clicking "Join this site, with google friend connect" you get the lovely:

"We're sorry...
We were unable to handle your request. Please try again or return a bit later."

Tons of complaints are going up in the support forums, but all I've seen in response is

"Google staff is aware of this issue and working towards a solution. Thanks for your patience."

Ugh, hopefully, they get it working again. It's never fun to have new followers frustrated with your site not working.

The other glitch I've been having is when I leave a comment, it leaves it two or three times and I have delete the duplicate comments. Is anyone else having that problem? I use Google Chrome as a browser and that might be the problem.

  1. I noticed last night that duplicat posts were being left and I used a mix of safari and explorer - but it wouldn't let me delete!!!

  4. I have the same problem. I can't sign in , I can't follow blogs on GFC! Everybody has GFC, and if I don't follow anybody, they won't follow me. I'm so disappointed.

  6. Yes, I noticed it and it sucks! That's why I now prefer to follow my favorite blogs using feedly instead. I loved reading the blogs using google friend connect, but they've been making it impossible! :(

  7. I have Google Friend Connect on my blogs and I have joined blogs, but I always read via a feed reader, currently Feedly. I don't think I've ever actually read a blog via Friend Connect.

  8. I had a problem trying to follow a new person. Some folks I used to follow isn't on my list anymore...Just wondering...how does Blogger make its money? Most of us don't have ads.

  9. Blogger is a Google service. It doesn't need to make its own money. It just needs to remain a useful service for Google to maintain.

  10. Same problem here. But I was thinking it's just me because I'm coming back to blogging after almost 5 years. Having hard time with this Google+Blogger thing. My posts appeared on the blogroll after 15 days since publishing...and without the thumbnails.....

  11. I read blogs with Feedreader, it's very similar to the old google reader but I like to follow with the members list as well, I hope they fix the problem soon!

  12. From what I've been reading on the forums, this has been going on for months and most bloggers aren't aware of it. Some people have posted things like contest entries that require participants to follow via GFC (the follow gadget), but they can't.

My worry is that Google is attempting to discontinue GFC and fold it into Googgle+. If they are I wish they would be straight about it so people can prepare and be clear as to what happens to the hundreds of thousands of people (or likely millions of people) using GFC.

For now I encourage everyone to make sure you have the gadget "Follow by Email" on your blogs so people that sign up will get an email whenever you make a new post. It also has great stats so you can see how many people read your posts too. I wrote a tutorial about it here, it's really easy: http://modernminihouses.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-to-add-follow-by-email.html

Still nothing from Google other than... "we are aware of the problem and are working towards a solution".
