Update on the Fashion House

My husband came up with the great suggestion of finishing the walls before I assemble the dollhouse. Paint is finally dry and I'm starting to put in the windows. The windows are much easier to install on a flat surface, and once walls are finished it should be pretty quick to glue the house together.

I bought some styrene strips that I'm cutting to size to make the windows, along with custom cut acrylic window panes from Tap Plastics. I really need to get a glue syringe for the small spaces. It's globbed out a few times and smeared on the "glass" so I'll have to figure out how to clean that up.
My lack of painting skills and color choice has been problematic. I painted all of the interior walls white before deciding on the exterior. I used a textured black paint that looks like concrete for the exterior, but I managed to get several black spots on the white when moving from my painting area to drying area. So I had to sand and repaint most of the white walls. UGH. I hate painting. For the exterior trim, I gave up and used a black marker instead of paint; finally a step where I don't have to wait for paint to dry.

Two walls done. Several more to go. These two won't connect, but I propped the walls up to feel a bigger sense of accomplishment. I knew this was going to take some time, but waiting for paint to dry has been slooooooooooow.

  1. Hi, I love the direction you're going. I had no idea before this challenge that modern miniatures were so in style. I think I'm in serious trouble. Please stop by my new venture into blogging and see how I transform a Georgian style dollhouse in to a Streamline Moderne. At least I will attempt this vision of mine. I'll be dropping by to follow your progress too.

  2. Hey Karen Great blog! Many of us modern mini enthusiasts are chomping at the bit for the giant challenge. I had no idea until I found Mini Modern and The Shopping Sherpa's blog 4 years ago, and I have been addicted ever since. I can't wait to see how you modernize your dollhouse. I love how a friend found it for and knew that your collection needed a roof over them instead of books next to them. ;P That's a good friend!

  3. I enjoy seeing your progress! And I am liking those windows. Will we get these houses done on time? :-)

  4. Hi Sandra! Your house is looking great! (I tried leaving a comment on your blog but when I submit it keeps saying page not found. Is that a wordpress template? ) The windows are looking A LOT better than I expected, but they take a lot of time to cut correctly. Measure twice, cut once, is more like measure three times for me. I think we are using the same textured spray paint, too funny. Don't you just love it?

  6. Actually I thought the 2 different sizes of walls would look neat together. I just saw a long window on top of the smaller wall and imagined a house on different intermediated levels as well. ^^
